The Future Glowed Brightly At The 2010 TWHBEA National Futurity

Shelbyville, TN – Talented young horses, dedicated breeders, owners and exhibitors, cooler temperatures and a good dose of fellowship and fun combined to make this year’s National Futurity one the best in recent memory. 170 entries made the gate call, strutting their stuff in front of judges Spencer Benedict, Jennifer Bingham, Mike Carpenter, Nathan Clark and Tommy Loid. As each entry came into the arena, the future of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed glowed brighter and brighter.

The show began with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem compliments of Morgan Mills and the display of our flag by Hall of Fame Trainer Bud Seaton and Counterfeit Dollar, owned by Curtice McCloy. The first class of the evening was the TWHBEA/WHTA Youth Challenge (Canter) class. Developed to encourage youth to master the canter, this class attracted four talented youth riders with Alex Way claiming the blue ribbon. The schedule then moved on to a full slate of halter, pleasure and performance classes. New this year were the Two and Three-Year-Old Country Pleasure class and a class for weanlings foaled earlier in the breeding year, between October 1, 2009 and March 31, 2009.

Following the National Futurity year after year it is always interesting to see how the nominated foals progress, as they get older. This year, two winners from 2009 walked their way into the winner’s circle. I Walk A Fine Line, the 2009 Yearling Fillies Champion, strolled to the 2010 Two-Year-Old Mares and Geldings title and 2009 Two-Year-Old Mares and Geldings Champion Me and Mrs. Jones claimed the 2010 Three-Year-Old Mares win. It is equally interesting to see breeders have success year after year. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brantley followed up their 2009 Weanling Colts win with The Master Of Blues with a 2010 Weanling Fillies win with Silver Dollar Debutante. Similarly, the Chip Carrier family followed up their 2009 Three-Year-Old Western Trail Pleasure victory with Copper’s Morning Glory with a 2010 Three-Year-Old Trail Pleasure victory with Copper’s In Style. Both of the Brantleys’ winners are out of good-producing mare Gen’s Genieve while both of the Carriers’ victors are by the late great Mr. Copper Top.

Once again, this year’s show was held on the first evening of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee.  TWHBEA staff worked with Celebration staff to put on this world-class event. Premier stallion sponsors for the 2010 TWHBEA National Futurity included Jazz King, owned by Double B Farms of Troy, Alabama, Master Of Jazz, owned by Mike and Lee McGartland of Ft. Worth, Texas, Out On Parole, owned by Randall and Sadie Baskin of Autumn Crest Farm in Franklin, Tennessee, Trip My Trigger, owned by Jo Ann Dowell of Canton, Ohio, and Watch It Now, owned by Waterfall Farms of Shelbyville, Tennessee. Corporate sponsors for the event included Manna Pro, FarmPaint.com, Tucker Milling, LLC and Just Horse’n Around – Bill and Karen Bean. Special thanks to everyone involved in making the 2010 TWHBEA National Futurity a huge success.
